About the role

We are seeking an experienced State News Director to lead the delivery of a competitive, polished and high-quality weeknight news bulletin across WIN Queensland.

Reporting to the National News Director, the State News Director will be responsible for the overall editorial direction, quality and integrity of the News product across the State, while leading the people, resources and operational requirements necessary to deliver a successful bulletin within agreed budgets and workflows.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the editorial direction and production of WIN News across Queensland.
• Ensuring the delivery of a competitive, polished and high-quality weeknight bulletin.
• Managing, mentoring and developing Journalists, Camera Operators and other news staff.
• Making timely editorial and resourcing decisions to achieve quality outcomes and deadlines.
• Maintaining the accuracy, balance, integrity and quality of the News product.
• Ensuring News content complies with applicable media law, regulatory requirements and WIN policies and procedures.
• Working collaboratively with News Presenters, Operations and Production, Sales and other key stakeholders.
• Managing staffing and operational requirements within agreed budgets and best-practice workflows.
• Working with People and Culture and senior management to manage staffing and employee matters.
• Supporting approved partnership and stakeholder activities relevant to the News product.
• Monitoring the overall performance of WIN News, including audience and ratings performance.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A minimum of five years' experience in sub-editing within a media environment, preferably television.
• Extensive journalism experience, with previous Chief of Staff and/or newsroom leadership experience highly regarded.
• Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring and developing journalistic staff.
• Strong editorial judgement and an understanding of issues affecting regional Queensland audiences.
• A strong understanding of media law and its application within a television news environment.
• The ability to maintain balance, accuracy, integrity and quality across the News product.
• Experience working effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, including editing, writing and newsroom operations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience using relevant newsroom systems and production technology.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and lead Journalist and Camera Operator teams.
• Strong decision-making skills and the ability to work under pressure.
• A commitment to staff development, coaching and continuous improvement.
• A Journalism degree or equivalent qualification is essential.
• The ability to work collaboratively with senior management, Operations, Production, Sales and People and Culture.
• A strong commitment to compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
